President's Message

Over the past year, I’ve had the pleasure to represent San Francisco’s Dental Hygienists as the President of your component.  When I moved to San Francisco in 2006 after completing the Dental Hygiene Program at Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa, I knew no one.  I found my way to our local dental hygiene society and was welcomed with open arms.

In May 2008, I was presented with the opportunity to represent San Francisco as a delegate in Sacramento at the California Dental Hygiene Associations annual session.   From the moment I arrived in Sacramento, I was humbled by the power, knowledge, experience and dedication that my colleagues had for the profession of dental hygiene. Returning from the May 2008 session, I knew I had a very unique opportunity here in San Francisco to promote the profession of dental hygiene.
Those of you that know me know that my passion is in community service.  In the last year, SFDHS has worked closely with SF Department of Public Health, providing dental hygiene services, education and compassion to our community.  We have also reestablished a presence on the San Francisco Children’s Dental Health Committee by collaborating with dental professionals all over the City to care for our children.

In June 2009, I was elected to a second one year term.   I am excited for this term as we continue to reach into the public health community, as well as grow communication among the local Registered Dental Hygienists in the Bay Area.  I will continue to embrace the learning opportunities from experienced dental hygienists who are making me a better clinician, educator and community advocate.   I’ve also received much support from and will enjoy building relations with dental vendors and other dental organizations who want an increased present in the San Francisco Dental Hygiene community in way of study groups and continuing education classes.

San Francisco is an amazing place to call home and we, as dental hygienists, will continue to thrive by networking and building mutually beneficial relationships with each other and others in our community.  As we collectively move forward I am very excited for the possibilities of this team.   Join me and share your ideas and experiences.

Sincerely,
Michael Long
