Volunteer Opportunities
We are seeking volunteers to help out for Give Kids a Smile Days!!
There are 2 events this year to choose from!!:
Friday Feb. 5th - 9am-3pm (2 shifts to choose from) at the Southeast Health Center Dental Clinic in Hunters Point, one of San Francisco's most undeserved area for dental services. (Need 11 Hygienists + volunteers)
Wednesday Feb 3rd - 1:00pm-5pm at WIC (Women, Infants and Children) San Francisco General Hospital (Need 5 Hygienists +volunteers)
We are targeting WIC families who live in the area and are offering free dental prophys, exams, fluoride varnish and oral health education; along with cute prizes and toothpaste, etc.
Come help, have fun, chat, practice your Spanish, laugh, wait, help, place fluoride varnish, teach parents, laugh, talk, You get the idea!
If you are a Hygienist, or Dental assistant, you will earn 3 CEUs for volunteering for the morning or afternoon shift. (8:30-noon or 11:30 to 3pm)
You will learn how to manage very young children in the dental office, what to look for in a young child's mouth and how to educate parents of very young children. After a short didactic instructional piece, you will jump in and provide either a toothbrush prophy for very young children or a regular child's prophy for older children, instruct mom or dad in how to keep their child's teeth healthy and decay free, and apply fluoride varnish.
If you are a Dental Student or Pre-Dental Student, you can help with oral health education, oral health games, sign in, transport and translation!
The SF Dental Hygiene Society is sponsoring this event along with the SF Dept. of Public Health, with support from UOP Dental Students and more groups everyday!
Please give me a call and volunteer today! Food will be provided! 575-5719
Together WE CAN DO IT!
Sincerely,
Margaret Fisher, R.D.H.A.P., B.S.

Dear PHC Supporters,
Five years ago we came together as a community, inspired together to tackle one of San Francisco's more painful and entrenched problems... homelessness. Five years ago, with your help, we created Project Homeless Connect. We had no budget, we had no staff, but we had a community of volunteers that were deeply committed to giving of themselves - we had you.
We continue to need your help until there are no longer people living without homes.
We have a lot to do so get out your calendars and mark the following upcoming events!

Component Volunteer Dental Screening

We had a lot of fun at our most recent SF Dental Hygiene
Component Volunteer Dental Screening at Wu Yee Family Resource Center on Saturday July 18, 2009! Together we screened 61 HeadStart Children age 2 - 4 years old, and placed Fluoride Varnish on 54 children!! 29% of the children had visible decay. The breakdown in decay rate was: Class I (no decay) 43 children, Class II (beginning decay) 12 children, Class III (severe decay) 6 children. I want to thank some really great people who were not only dedicated hygienists, but so kind and sweet to the little guys who came by. We had several children who initially refused, but eventually after watching a while, decided they might try! It was so great to see these little people have a happy dental experience!

Thank you so much to: Heather Steich, Jeremy Scheckengost, Gwen Lang, Bianca Wu, Paulon Lee, Wendy Leung and Nikita Yefimova as well as our highschool intern, Janice Sanchez, who helped keep papers straight. We couldn't have done this important health screening without you dedicated souls!! Kudos to you!
Sincerely,
Margaret Fisher, R.D.H.A.P., B.S.
